CO2 And How It Works

The Function Of A CO2 Airgun
The handling of the CO2 capsule system is simple. The capsule is inserted in the pistol and mechanically pierced by a bolt during closing. After operation of the trigger, the pestle is hit by the hammer and the valve is opened, so that the gaseous CO2 excapes the capsule.

The Function of CO2 Capsules With Airguns
For use in airguns, the CO2 is filled in small capsules. At room temperature, and normal pressure the CO2 is gaseous. The pressure rises proportionally to the outdoor temperature. In the capsules there is always a thermal balance between liquid and gaseous CO2.

This effect is being used in the best possible way. In CO2 airguns made by Umarex the CO2 gas is directly "drawn off" the capsule causing the pressure inside the capsule to decline. As a result a part of the liquid CO2 gas vaporizes restoring the balance of pressure at the same time. For this process warmth from the environment is needed, which can be seen from the n oticeable cooling of the CO2 capsule.

Due to the fact that the reaction of the propellant gas CO2 varies according to the outdoor temperature the shooting characteristics differ from shot to shot. As long as there is a remaining quantity of liquid CO2 in the capsule the pressure remains constant. However, if the temperature inside the capsule should decline due to rapid fire, the balance of pressure will also decline and thus also the speed of the pellet. The coincidence of these factors can also be noticed from the pattern of scores. So the number of shots as well as the muzzle velocity and the pattern of scores achieved with one CO2 capsule depend on the laws of physics.

At room temperature and with the corresponding breaks between the shots 10 x 8 series of shots can be fired with one CO2 capsule. The number of shots from a CO2 cartridge will change with the temperature.

Fast Action
The new CO2 action airguns can be reloaded quickly and safely. After operation of the release lever the slide of the pistol moves forward thus releasing the large loading slot.
Then the loaded 8-shot cylinder magazine is inserted and the slide pulled back again. Ready!

Power Cocking System
The length of the CO2 capsules differs. Depending on the manufacturer or also on the production charge, the lengths of neck can vary greatly. Such differences in length are adjusted by the cartridge screw after insertion of the CO2 capsule.
By closing the cartridge lock the CO2 capsule is pierced without any loss of pressure.

Speed Loading
The cylinder magazine is swung out as on the original gun. Now the cylinder magazine can simply be exchanged and swung back into the frame. That's all!

Screw System
Here the CO2 capsule is placed in the grip and the cylinder retaining screw is tightened manually until the CO2 capsule is pierced.

Blowback System
With a portion of the gas pressure provided by the CO2 capsule, the slide of the PPK/S is pushed rearward. At the same time the hammer is precocked. The slide spring pushes the slide back to its initial position. THe next shot can then be made..

Quick Action

When velocity matters, the simple exchanging of the CO2 magazine is very advantageous. Shooting can be continued with hardly any interuption!
